some bug notes: bug 58 and bug 54

Just doing a little bug-hunting this afternoon, and noticed:

Bug 58 could be fixed by upgrading to a newer Python -- 2.x or newer.

Bug 54 could be fixed by removing the old netpbm and pil code from the
image parser.  (I think.)
