IIRC PalmOS 3 and higher support 1bpp and 2bpp, 3.5 and higher support 4bpp and 8bpp, and 4.0 and higher support 16bpp. On Palm's support downloads page, there looks like there are two upgrades for your Palm V, one to 3.5.3 and the other to 4.1 .. Within OS 3.5 there is better support for feature memory. Plucker uses this to cache image data which speeds up the screen updates. OS 3.1 does support this feature but it's rather ricketey.
