IIRC PalmOS 3 and higher support 1bpp and 2bpp, 3.5 and higher support
4bpp and 8bpp, and 4.0 and higher support 16bpp.

On Palm's support downloads page, there looks like there are two
upgrades for your Palm V, one to 3.5.3 and the other to 4.1 .. If you
upgrade you may be able to get 4bpp; provided that the display
hardware actually supports it :)

When the viewer runs, one of the first thing it does is query the OS
for what type of depths it supports. If you upgrade the OS, it might
produce the results you're looking for.

Within OS 3.5 there is better support for feature memory. Plucker uses
this to cache image data which speeds up the screen updates. OS 3.1
does support this feature but it's rather ricketey.

It's generally a good idea to upgrade becuase it would fix several
other bugs in the PalmOS itself you're probably even not aware of.
