Hi everyone,

I saw a posting from Dave Golden recently about possibility of using
password protected sites (Form driven) that require you to get
authenticate before getting access to the content, and not seen any
response, and since I have a similar request, I thought I should rephrase
it in a slightly different way and perhaps some of the brains can converge
here.

I am fully aware of the issues passing cleartext passwords and ids if used
on the URL and debates that have taken place in the past on this thread.
What I am willing to try is some of the content sites that simply make you
sign up in order to keep track of you so they can custom tailor the
content for your needs if they understand what you are interested in. The
trend in this pattern seems to be growing consistently and these exposing
the userid + password as a cleartext is not really a big harm, since most
people I know create them because you have to in the first place and not
really give any personal information that could be misused.

Having said that, if a person is willing to live with the risk, is there a
way one can consistently use a one specific approach to spider such web
sites as well?

Someone had offered (a while ago) to generate a URL that would be
acceptable for password protected sites given a normal URL. I am not sure
how that would work for all URLs that may be using different means to
accept userid+passwords and authenticate you, but if anyone has thought
through this topic and have any suggestions, I would be willing to listen
or even communicate offline.

Thanks,
Bharat Welingkar
