The newest viewers (such as the snapshot available from www.plkr.org,
but maybe not in the June hires release) can pan large images.  Obviously,
these are subject to breakage, but I've been happy with the 9/21 version.

You don't see any scrollbar, but if you put your stylus down and drag
it around, the picture will follow, which lets you see the rest of the
image.

Note that I haven't tried this with inline images; if your channel
has anything besides the image (even a title, let alone a second
image), then you may wish (or need?) to combine this with 
Lauren's suggestion about thumbnails.
