Hello;
The subject is in the form of a question because I think it's inaccurate but can't come up with a better description.
A couple of days ago, I installed JPluck on my Compaq Presario 2805 running Windows XP Home to permit web pages to be "plucked" from Firefox to be hotsynched to a Palm T|E. The default browser is Firefox; the email client is Eudora 5.0.
Since then, upon startup there is a Zone Alarm Alert saying:
SERVER PROGRAM
Windows Explorer trying to act as a server.
Validation: Not available in ZoneAlarm
Application: explorer.exe
Source IP: 0.0.0.0 Port 1024
Choosing the "More info" radio button opens Firefox where ZoneAlarm suggests denying access.
When "Remember this setting" is chosen, it does not do that, so at the next restart, the same alert comes up.
AdAware and Search & Destroy have been run. AA successfully removed two tracking files, but S&D, which found two bad registry entries, will not complete its removal process.
The registry entries S&D found are:
Dropper HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DownloadManager
and
Xer0x HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\xerox
When S&D reaches the point of "Fix these..." a popup comes up, then very quickly closes, saying "S&D will set a restore point..." with more that there isn't time to read before the window closes itself. That action is never completed and clicking "Help" instantly closes the S&D application.
Since this problem began, a few minutes after starting up, the computer stops responding to commands. At that point, there is absolutely no response *or* there is just the eror sound when a menu item is chosen or a selection (button, etc.) is clicked with the touch pad, but no action follows.
Already opened apps may be minimized, maximized, restored or closed as usual, but opening an item on the desktop won't work.
* Clicking "Start" or pressing the windows key opens an unfamiliar panel with a tab saying "Windows XP Home Edition" on its left edge instead of the usualy scrollable list. This panel has 19 folders or application iclons, but none may be opened. It is sometimes possible to close this panel by pressing the windows key; if that doesn't work, it it necessary to unplug the computer in order to shut down.
* Ctr-Alt-Del only elicits the error sound.
* Alt-Tab moves from one application to another, but the usual window showing icons for open apps is not visible.
* Hotsynching of the T|E works, but the Hotsynch notification window is not now opening to show the synching progress as it always has done before.
I thought JPluck had been removed, but found that there is a directory C:\Documents $ Settings\Angela Taylor\.jpluck2 still there.
Is it OK to jsut manualyy remove it?
Has anyone else had similar problems with JPluck ?
Would uninstalling and re-installing Firefox possibly resolve the problem?
Other suggestions?
Thanks,
Angela
