I would be more than happy to host a productive irc channel to
help move this along further. Real-time interaction tends to be a lot more
useful and motivating than bouncing back and forth with emails on the same
topics, IMHO.

You've no-doubt seen the references from others replying on this
thread. For my own needs, I rolled my own conversion tools with Perl,
mostly to rewrap and reformat the texts. I needed to give them a little
slice-and-dice code to turn the "2-dimensional" Gutenberg ebooks and
etexts into something a bit more "book-like" (cover page, attribution page
for PG itself, etc.).

My main problem, is that there is zero consistency in the format
that the editors/auditors/reviewers use when creating the "cleaned-up"
versions of the PG works. This means much of the work is touch-and-go.
I've spent a good amount of time trying to put the different kinds of
formats into categories I can trigger against, but... it hasn't been easy.

Feel free to head on over to irc.plkr.org, and join either
#plucker to continue this further, or we can create #gutenberg or any
other channel naming convention you'd like, to help auditors and editors
keep moving along with their works.

This offer includes the upstream Gutenberg effort as well.

        Hope to see you there!

d.
