I doubt you meant to say that you can't explain what your code does. I think what you meant is that it takes too long to help or that there are too many possible combinations to explain in a reasonable time. Both of which are understandable. > > I don't want to get into a flame war but saying "I > > don't know the details, maybe somebody else on the > > list can help" is a lot more user friendly than > > "look it up yourself". > > I know the details, I did not mean to imply that you didn't. > but why would I bother to explain them to you when > they require an understanding of the source code, > i.e. something you aren't interested in? Hopefully someone would bother to explain it because a user was asking about why the software did what it did. Plucker was doing something to his computer even though he tried to tell it not to. Perhaps it was user error, a virus, a bug, a hardware error, or even a piece of malware. He didn't know, so he asked. That is what I thought this mailing list was for. Wanting to know why is different than wanting to learn C (or whatever Plucker is written in). I understand that to fully comprehend Plucker's actions I would probably have to go to the source code, but to reasonably understand Plucker I shouldn't have to. > My time is better spent on explaining source code > details to someone that will actually contribute > changes to the viewer... Fine, I don't have a problem with that. I'm just asking everyone to be polite to the users. I'm trying to get my organization to seriously consider using more open source. Support is a corporate concern. Telling a user to go away in a user support group is not a selling point. It's better if you just don't respond.
