Who: Clinton Wittstruck
What: Cheap and Easy VPN with Tailscale
Where: 1930 SW 4th Avenue, Portland, Oregon 97201-5304, Room 86-01
When: Thursday, October 1, 2026 at 7 PM
Why: The pursuit of technology freedom
Summary:
Clinton will talk about how he setup a $25 Walmart TV box as a VPN
gateway, to share IP-Locked streaming services with a friend or
relative, using official apps from the Google Play store, and Developer
mode ADB settings. It's fun to play with these boxes, to see what they
can do besides stream TV.
Bio:
Clinton spent 40 years working in system administration and customer
tech support, for Tektronix and Siemens, working with systems from
ancient Vax VMS to modern day Linux etc. He is a VI editor user and
doesn't know EMACS :) In the 90's he produced an award winning public
access TV show (The Chess Show) still occasionally replayed on Portland
Cable for the handful of remaining Cable TV subscribers. Now retired
after almost 3 years, all that tech stuff is getting kind of fuzzy, and
he mostly just tinkers with Linux and streaming his home video library
(when not doing household chores and maintenance).

With luck, the talk will be recorded and later posted to YouTube.
PLUG is back at Portland State University, thanks to the Computer
Science Department and to Andrew Greenberg. The room is in the basement
of the PSU Engineering Building (also connected underground to the
Fourth Avenue Building, or FAB). Enter through the Engineering Building.
The outside door will be locked, but there should be someone present at
the entrance to let you in starting at 6:40pm until 7pm. There will be a
sign on the door with a phone number you can SMS if there isn't someone
there to let you in immediately. Sorry for the late announcement!
