Intel has embraced Linux pretty well of late so aside from hybrid soft raid
it all works. Most people use Linux on older computers because it tends to
bring them a second wind. And hardware waste kind of bugs us all.
Intel has one of the largest kernel teams of any company right
now. They do a pretty good job at getting support for their hardware
into the kernel as quickly as possible, usually working on it well
before the hardware is available to the public.
Any idea what Dell systems you were having trouble with? We have a
number of different power edge systems in our testing environment
that get used for RHEL testing.
Depending on budget and need you can find some great deals on refurbished
servers from Newegg.

Linux is smaller and faster than windows but avoid too old say a Pentium4
64 bit would work but you would still have by todays standards a slow
computer
