Thanks, Rusty.

I had not found the first link you offered, which seems right on target. I did
find a lightdm.conf file, that’s the one I said had just one entry and it was
not relevant. Now I have some pointers to possible settings I can try.

I’m not near the PC right now, but it’s clearly MINT 18 and was supposedly the
latest, so presumably 18.3.

This system didn’t have an mdm.conf file, in fact “find” didn’t find anything
on the disk about “mdm”. Online I saw references to it, but didn’t find the
setting that I may need, "AutomaticLoginEnable=False”, which I’ll keep in mind
as a backup.

Stephen: You mentioned a live DVD, thanks for the nudge. Since I am now
supporting two Mint systems besides my own desktop, I think it’s time to learn
how to make a USB backup boot. We do have the “tom” account doing the usual
sudo and admin things, but I’ve been afraid to wipe out the “user” account
because the auto-login might hang up looking for it. I’d thought about a live
DVD as insurance, but your mention has pushed me into getting it done.

Thanks all,
Victor

Is this mint 17 or mint 18?

In fact, is it 17, 18, 18.1, 18.2, or 18.3?

If you have a /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf file, then set it to something like
[Seat:*]
#autologin-guest=false
#autologin-user=john
#autologin-user-timeout=0

(I think. Or that might turn it on, not sure. Found that info
athttps://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=252967
<https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=252967>)

The other file to look for is /etc/mdm/mdm.conf, where you make sure
AutomaticLoginEnable=False.  (I found that
athttps://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/180565/how-to-autologin-as-root-to-mint-17-1

but note that this is for turning it ON, you want to turn it off. (This is
for mint 17.1))

Again, if you’re using mint 18.2,
seehttps://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/381785/how-do-i-enable-auto-login-in-mint-18

which gives even better info about how to make sure you’re running the
display-manager that the information is applicable to.

You also might need to look at /etc/mdm/mdm.conf
(seehttps://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/45573/how-to-disable-auto-login-in-linux-mint

Subject: Mint Cinnamon with a default login

A vendor loaded Tom's new PC with Mint Cinnamon. It powers up without
authentication to a default user account. How do we disable that?

The details:

It was set up with one temporary admin user, named “user”, with password
“password.”

So we set up the “tom” account, with admin status, and then made “user” an
ordinary user with its permissions turned off, and a serious password.

We ran fine as “tom”, but when we shut down and restarted, it came right up as
“user” without authentication.

We can log out of the “user” session and we get the login dialog so we can get
to the “tom” account.

We could remove “user,” but I thought it might hang up looking for that account.

I did some web searching and they referred to two config files to be adjusted,
but one didn’t exist and the other had only one line which wasn’t relevant to
the issue.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Victor
