Virtualbox also has a converter, if you start with the original hard drive (full drive, not the partition):
vboxmanage convertfromraw /dev/sdb my_new_virtual_drive.vdi --format VDI Done. I’ve used this with windows and Linux (Mint) disks, all worked fine for me.
