This is all.
$ cat interfaces
# interfaces(5) file used by ifup(8) and ifdown(8)
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
How do I put something in there?

Is there anything inside /etc/network/interfaces?
Thanks,
Aaron

Thanks Aaron for your suggestion. I followed your instructions.
Now Discover recognizes that it's online. The network manager gui
still isn't there. I tried nmcli.
$ nmcli -a
enp5s0: unmanaged
"Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411"
ethernet (r8169), 00:1A:4D:93:EF:2F, hw, mtu 1500
lo: unmanaged
"lo"
loopback (unknown), 00:00:00:00:00:00, sw, mtu 65536
How do I tell network manager to manage the connection? I checked
/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf. I changed false to true,
rebooted but no effect.
[main]
plugins=ifupdown,keyfile
[ifupdown]
#managed=false
managed=true
[device]
wifi.scan-rand-mac-address=no
