You are stuck with Cox's SMTP, but you can still run sshd. I've got
mine running on 443, so I can access it from locations where the only
outgoing ports allowed are 80 and 443 (plus, the traffic looks
encrypted, just as it should on an SSL port :). Plus, AFAICT, deru's
top speed is 1Mb/s. I'm getting 12 down and 1 up from Cox right now,
for less than half the price of deru.

As for the modem, as long as it's DOCSIS 2.0 and not 1.x, it should
be fine. Get or build a decent router/switch, and you're set. I
didn't have a spare box lying around, so I got a Linksys WRT54GS
(back before they were castrated. Get a WRT54GL now), put DD-WRT on
it, and have all the features I want and more. As a bonus, if you get
a Linksys modem as well (I forget the model number), they stack, so
you can save some space. I worried about heat dissipation at first,
but after running this setup for about a year, everything seems good.
