Do you know any more detail than that?  Any error messages or anything?

Instant messenger programs will fall back to port 80, the web access
port, if they cannot get out on whatever one they prefer.  That is why
they are HARD to block at the firewall.

I use GAIM regularly both at home and at work.  I admin the firewalls at
home and at work.  I have never had to open any ports to make IM connect
and function.  So, again I say, you should not have to open any ports
for it to work.
