FYI you should be able to go to http://192.168.100.1 to get to the cable modem interface, where you should be able to see what sort of error it is getting. At least that's the IP that worked for me both when I had a Cox-provided motorola surfboard modem, as well as with the Linksys one I have now.

internet mac, and threw the laptop away.  No problem since.
