You have to reinstall to switch from x86_64 to i686 or vice versa. Fortunately, this is easy and doesn't take a whole lot of time. Just back up all the stuff in your /etc that you care about, and make sure your /home and / are separate. -- If you're looking for trouble, I can offer you a wide selection.
