You could always get one of these "plug computers" and attach a large external USB drive to it. It only draws 5w of power and runs ubuntu so you could easily setup your own samba and nfs shares, as well as run some kind of media server applications.
I ordered the $99 "dev kit" at http://www.marvell.com/products/embedded_processors/developer/kirkwood/sheevaplug.jsp I got an email Wed saying it was shipped.
