Sure you can. Buy a commercially supported distro like Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Red Hat has hired many of the "top guns" in the OSS community so they can work on that stuff. > (as > they are unpaid, etc), Not so much any more. Red Hat, IBM, Intel and many other very large shops have hired a boatload of Linux developers. The days of the lone hacker in his garage are mostly gone. That's not to say there aren't still a bunch of them out there, but most of the really hard stuff is done by really clever folks who work for big companies with large scale labs.
