http://atheros.rapla.net/ shows allot of cards based on the atheros chipset, which i personally have had 100% success. so this will have a list of cards that are based on this which should be a god place to start.
the one time i had a nic that did not work out of the box i was able to connect wired and Ubuntu loaded Ndiswrapper and a driver to run.
