The only problem with google date searching is that it is based on the last modified time sent when its robot collects the page. In the case of things like forums or dynamic blogs those dates are always fairly recent depending on how the page was cached by the webserver.

Aaah, is that new Joseph? Part of the Google redesign? I never noticed

If you're logged in and search, you should see search tools on the
    left column.
You can select a date range and other criteria there. It's one
extra step (search, then select date range), but it's a little bit
    easier than advanced search.
