I dont think thats fair,
Even though i personally won't be too much inclined to use sybase, the
fact remains that Proprietory applications _will_ remain as a
significant part of the computing for decades to come. As linux users
if we need to promote linux we can not shunn away from the people who
just need to use those propriatory apps.

I think this is one of the arguments that we have had over and over again. Is this mailing list for Linux or FOSS? The name LUG is a misnomer ... all around the world. We have decided time and again that this list about FOSS.

Otherwise we should also ban discussing java plugins/apps, crossover
office and heck even the firefox flash plugin. (do we need to include
mplayer ?? i think it wasn't free, as in free speech, atleast few
years back i am not sure of the current status) got my point?

Mplayer is open source. I'm not sure whether it is free or not. And yes, we do need to discourage things like java plugins, crossover office etc. java apps and the java language is a different question as there are free Java compilers around.

So as long as the discussion remains about using sybase _on_ _linux_
and issues involved in it i think it should be ok.

I disagree. If the issues are about Linux (or any open source OS), then it's ok. But discussing Sybase issues is not.

Aditya.
