I do get a follwoing line in there ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready despite my being able to ping to wlan0 ip address... but not to any other external IP.
The packet comes back from a level much higher in the stack than the network driver. Ex: ping can work on your wired interface when mii-diag shows you clearly that the card has no link.
