And how are you writing the image on the SD cards.

Can your bios on the laptop tell you that you can boot from 
CDROM/SATA/USB/SDCARD ?

Most of the embedded devices have u-boot installed on the SD cards
which initialize the cpu and peripherals of the boards.
So have you compile the u-boot for x86 platform boards.

Their are boot.src or boot.ini files which help guide bootup the boards.

You need to specific the image name and boot partition of the rootfs
to make this happen on the SD card.

setting up u-boot for laptop on sdcards could be initial hick-up but worth 
trying.

if i do the same installation from usb pen drive, it boots very smoothly.
