Hi there everyone,
Apologies for the slightly (or is it grossly?) off-topic message. I'd just like
to share a little ... argh news. I'm hoping (of course) that there are some
people on the list who can help me out.
I've been an I-Manila patron for quite some time now, and honestly have nothing
major against it as an ISP, aside from the fact that the PAP authentication
problem (erratic, sometimes the dang thing won't respond to PAP auth requests)
still hasn't been solved. However a client requested that I move their system
to Pacific Internet because they wanted to take advantage of the great price
discounts with Pacific's current promo. Argh, more reconfiguration for me.
Anyway ... first thing to go kaput was the SMTP relaying. I-Manila had their
SMTP relaying set up really nice. The SMTP server is very strict when you're
coming from outside the network, but from inside you can basically masquerade
as anyone you want to be. What's neat about this? I-Manila's got your caller
ID and has this matched in the logs by time to your IP address (or so I hope),
and the message has an IP stamp. So people who spam by connecting to I-Manila
can get caught (or so I hope, again). However, people with good intentions like
me, who have virtual domains, can use the ISP's SMTP to send mail from say ...
leather-collection.com. Unfortunately, Pacific's doesn't have this set up. So
my poor dial-up box has to negotiate the rough waters of SMTP transfers to down
servers on its own. !@)(*%)(*&@!# (oops, sorry).
Another thing I noticed ... is it just me, or is Pacific slow? I've got my browsers
each set up to use proxy.pacific.net.ph:8080, going through a Linux box with
kernel 2.2.16 on a 486 acting as a masquerading gateway (or whatever, hehehe)
but still ... pathetic speed! Hmm ...
For now I've got no choice but to let this particular client suffer, it was
their choice after all, for the price that's hard to beat. I was hoping some
friendly ones on the list could share their experiences with me. Anyone got
relaying to work with Pacific? Any tips to speed things up? Should I set the
MRU/MTU on the Linux box to be a particular value? Currently I've got DialD
setup to 576 for both.
Anyway, that's all for now. Apologies again for the off-topic. I send this message
as a friend, a brother, and a fellow Linux user/admin. I hope we can help each
other out (read: somebody who knows a Pacific tech guy please tell him/her to
help and fix the relaying). Or ... should relaying like this really not be allowed?
