I have done that - but I _REALLY_ don't recommend for you to exert
that much masochism. You'd need to upgrade your init.d scripts,
install module-init-tools, etc. (aside from doing regression tests)
that it's just _MUCH_ better to just upgrade it to another distro
(e.g. Fedora Core, Mandrake) that really uses a 2.6 kernel.

It's just easier to upgrade the whole thing. You can get a working
system without much pain, misery and suffering; and be productive
faster (isn't it what it's all about? :).
