I have a thumbdrive though that I used before without a partition and
mounted as /dev/sda without any problem.
Right now, I have two partitions (vfat and reiser4) in it and still works.
Now regarding your Original problem, check out what 'top' gives you.
1. open up a Terminal (Konsole)
2. then
$top
you can see there what's turning your CPU usage to the max.
