Is it really being so absolutely dominated by Microsoft? Last I checked
proprietary Unices like Solaris and AIX still collectively hold a bigger
chunk of the enterprise server market than Windows and GNU/Linux put
together.

This is certainly not true. Our company's own client portfolio is proof
to the contrary.

Also not true, as again we do have clients who do this sort of thing on
GNU/Linux, and they are pleased with the results.

The desktop is hardly what I would associate with enterprise computing.

If that's what they mean (and that would be a highly misleading way of
putting it), then it's certainly true.

use GNU/Linux quite extensively to run some of their services, and most
likely the third entrant has more than a few installations as well. In
these companies, it would seem that proprietary Unix is still king for
most of their really mission-critical stuff, and it is actually Windows
that is fairly rare in their data centers. Every major ISP in this
country it would seem, uses GNU/Linux in some capacity; many actually
use it to run the bulk of their infrastructure.
