It may that you're using a keyboard layout that is _us_intl_. Check your xconfig file. If you want to use the _us_ characters, make sure that the XKbLayout contains "us, us_intl" and that there is XKbOptions item that contains "grp:alt_shift_toggle". If there are changes in the xconfig file, you need to restart the X server. The next time you type and you want to avoid us_intl characters, press Alt+Shift first.
