Well.. here's a scary thought: the "value add" of OS X is really Quartz (Display PDF: which is by no means original, since Sun had Display Postscript in NeWS/OpenWindows back in 1994), the GUI, and the applications. But the kernel is pretty much bone-stock FreeBSD running on top of a Mach microkernel.
