i have not attended both events but what exactly does 'ala linuxworld
sans the fees' mean? if you mean to be held in a high-profile location
providing expensive amenities, then you cannot do without the fees
unless the organizers can get some very hefty sponsors who will foot
the bill.

linuxworld: organized, publicized, reached intended audience, not free.
--high profile location not needed. but hopefully reaches its audience.

if i am not mistaken commercial events do not have 'advocacy' as its
prime objective. sometimes there are other financial benefits involved
so they are better organized. they have paid people they can lash out
if something goes awry. SFD and PLUG are pure volunteer efforts. if
you think they should better then pitch in your help because they are
severely undermanned especially for holding events like those. just
the fact that they can organize and hold such events is already a feat
in itself.

ciao!

i have seen them at work, and the reason im replying is because i'd like to help too, also, it is acknowledged that they held inspirational events, inspirational (that it inspires uninvolved people, like me) to help in a cause. True, they are undermanned, and it is enough reason to volunteer to organizations like these (even in my own, tiny, microscopic way)
