UPDATE: I've just installed and in a matter of a few minutes found out
that xfce4 is snappy and bearable on the ECS Desknote A530. I am
currently using it, and would most probably be using this DE for all the
other Ubuntu installations I will be installing.

All I had to do was:

sudo apt-get install xfce4

And in a matter of couple of minutes downloading, I was able to set it
as my default session from the Ubuntu login screen (which is GDM IIRC).

xfce is really good for the lower end desktop/laptops and uses the
gtk2.0 engine too so it retains most (if not all) of the GNOME look and
feel that uses gtk2.0 engine just the same.
