I believe the Proliant series you're using are the old beige boxes, as
opposed to the newer and more elegant-looking ones (IMHO) which are dark
gray and black, have dark red buttons on the drive handles, and have
model numbers like DL740 and ML550. Your RAID controller, which is the
only piece of hardware that may cause serious problems in installation,
has probably a long history of support on GNU/Linux by now. I don't
foresee any problems for you if you try to install Debian on it, but you
may have problems in the future should you experience stability and
reliability issues.
The only reason why RedHat and SuSE are the only ones on the list is
that they're the only ones that HP/Compaq has certified for use with the
system, and they're the only ones that they publish updates for specific
drivers and other software for. The problems may arise are related to
third-party support: e.g. if your database is Oracle or something like
it, which isn't certified with Debian, leaving you with no chance to get
any of the updates or patches you'll certainly need sooner rather than
later. If you want official manufacturer-supported driver updates,
you'll never get these for anything other than RHEL or SLES for the
foreseeable future. If you don't care for official manufacturer
support, and have the knowledge to download the sources for driver
updates and build them yourself for your own system, and don't use
finicky proprietary software for your database and other applications,
then probably you'll do fine.
yes, they are beige and they look like mini cabinets, hehehe, they are
space consuming and the fan sounds like you're running a diesel engine
(",) kidding aside, i'm will install LAMP in those boxes.
