Will you have separate log-in screens that communicates with two distinct sets of IO with this configuration?

You only need that if you want multiple raw console access. If only one
set of input/output devices will access the raw console and the rest
will operate through X, you don't need to modify your kernel. I use "raw
console" because the other input/output devices can get shell access
through an X terminal program.
