Within the city area the carrier is GPRS while on wide open areas/city-limits the carrier switches to EDGE.

I guess GPRS is more tolerant on crowded city so you can actually put up lots of it and cover small areas while EDGE is fast and has wide coverage but its not practical for tight spaces like the city since it would just cause lots of dead spots. I dont know tho if GRPS "in-building repeaters" like malls, use EGDE (EDGE ->GRPS).
