The PowerPC 970MP, though with a 100W TDP as compared to a 50W
dual-core Pentium
M, is still the cheapest way to having a dual-core, Power4-based machine at
mortal (well, nearly demigod) prices. The PowerPC chips are quite good for
floating point operations (for encryption, video, etc) - very nice for

Linux-based appliances along those areas (but that's just me).

As I can't afford such, I'm settling with Opterons instead.

check out the GMP benchmarks. Opterons are way faster than G5's, at least when running GMP.
