Nope.

Even with IDE you're not limited to 4 physical drives. That's just your
typical consumer motherboard limitation, which you can override by
buying more IDE controllers. Now, more drives would mean more powerful
PSU's and more heat generation, which requires better airflow with
better chassis that could accomodate more drives, and better
airconditioning. 

If you'd inspect the Linux source code, much of the artificial device
number limitations have been lifted with the onset of the 2.6 kernel.
