1. what makes it a primer specifically for journalists? i don't see
anything specific to journalism that wouldn't apply to any other group
of users, like for example, housewives, or biologists, or the
uninitiated linux-challenged public. why not call it "Linux and Open
Source Software: A Primer" (for the unitiated, the general public, or
something to that effect). are there any issues in this primer that
address journalism specific issues? the reason for asking this is that
for people like me in a different field who see words in the title
like "for journalists" will not not even bother to look at the article
thinking its only for journalists, when in fact, i could also read it
and benefit as much as the next journalist out there.
If you appreciate it and you're not a journalist, then good for you. But if a journalist sees the title as meant for him and reads it, then mission accomplished. Whether or not you're the intended audience is incidental.
2. what is the rationale for writing the article? if this will be
distributed online, doesn't it just make it redundant since there's
a lot of linux articles for beginners out there. I would guess that
any journalist is trained on the art of research, so he/she should be
able to find the information about linux and open source fairly easily
with a simple google search. the only things i really see different in
the article are the plug ang philippine specific ones. so why not
call this "PLUG, FOSS & Linux: A primer ..."?
This is why I wanted the primer to be introduced as official definitions "as PLUG sees it", or something to that effect. This will also provide PLUG members a guideline as to what to point people (journalists, their bosses, anyone) towards should they need to define Linux at some point.
anyway we're losing focus here. Imo let's get it done na lang siguro and start moving forward.
Maiba tayo: re Dom's previous post, one of the primary reasons I disliked it was because the focus needs to be PLUG, with Linux/Foss as secondary. I believe the linux press corp's goal should be to promote PLUG, as PLUG's goal is to promote Linux, hence promoting PLUG promotes Linux.
Therefore a list of linux users promotes Linux, not PLUG. I'd rather we make a list showing PLUG's successful efforts, as these are more to the point.
best regards
Gary
