I have five DEs on my PC.  Gnome, KDE, Fvvm, Xfce, and fluxbox and it doesnt mess any setup on each DE... Just feel free to experiment on the DE that might suit your taste.

As david says, generally installing new desktop environments won't mess
anything up.  it just eats some more disk space.

you might also try icewm.  It's what I use.  there are lots of others,
ion, for instance.  but i don't like how ion works (or xfce either).
try out a few desktop managers and choose the one you like most.
