Thanks for the link Mhac. It helped me understand more about creating images and it gave me an idea to play with my dad's Windows box. Unfortunately, that it's no solution to my problem. I'll be moving my files in the disk image to a "proper" partition next week -- that will surely make my Debian system fully usable, but i'm still looking for ways to solve this problem just as an exercise.
