shaito,
the real problem as many of the posters have noted is your 128mb ram. you can, in theory get a decent machine/speed running with just that--- gui and all like firefox or open office goodies at a decent speed. but like i said in my previous post, you'd really have to know a lot of which stuff goes into the kernel--- like enable the i/o scheduler for example and get that pre-emp kernel stuff running. tips and tricks that you could learn but adds to your learning curve. some distros have that enabled. others don't. which means you'll have to at least have to know how to compile a kernel and as a newbie--- i wouldn't recommend it. but if you're up to the challenge, why not right? just expect to be frustrated a lot.
dude another problem lies in that fact that the easiest way to install linux the first time is to install all--- bells and whistles and learn from there. know what you like and what you need. 128mb ram just won't hack it. 256 will be slow. trust me. i tried running off 256mb ram on a pentium-m 1.5ghz centrino machine using opensuse 10 beta--- it was slow. but i builit a gentoo box on it and its response under the same spec is amazing. i mean not scientific response--- user perception as to how quick it feels. i got a full desktop up and running in two days (downloading of source files and building every basic thing from the ground up and i did some short cuts) when i've gone through red hat, debian, mandrake, ubuntu, vidalinux, kororaa, and many others and i've settled with gentoo.
on the one hand if you use gentoo on a p3 with 128mb box--- will take you at least a week just to get things going so for a newbie it really isn't the best way to go. it will just frustrate you and you will go crazy doing it. but it is not impossible to do.
my best suggestion, if you have the space/machine use a more modern machine with at least 256mb ram or better yet 512mb. try all sorts of distros--- and find one you're comfortable with because as you can see from all the posts, we all have our little preferences based on our need, experiences etc. etc. after getting your feet wet, playing around with an older box with limited resources will be much easier. ;)
hope it helps.

A standard linux? Sounds scary :) You're missing the whole point dude.

in fairness to the bayanihan linux makers, i think it's a noble effort to create one that's geared towards the philippine/education setting. in my perspective though, i'd rather use the more common or well-supported distros like ubuntu because it allows me to patch security updates and keep track of upgraded packages more easily than by compiling the stuff by myself. i'm sure the others here will have their own reasons for using such and such distro or for compiling/rolling their own.On 5/17/06, Happy Kamote Foundation < [EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:On 5/17/06, Zak B. debianihan linux nalang! wakekekeke!

oo nga naman. wala naman talagang problema kung gumawa ka ng sarili
mong distro. PERO gaya gaya lang naman nangyayari e. Ano ba ng edge ng
bayanihan against the other debian based distros like Ubuntu, Xandros

Correction. Debianihan Linux pala. hindi
ubuntunihan! wekekekekekekek!

For whatever it's worth, Debian powers the PLUG mailing list and
searchable archive servers.

So this "should" be addressable by infrastructure and system design,
right? What I'm concerned about really is whether the nature of the
actual protocol causes or contributes to the "DoS'ability" of the
service, which can be the case.
At any rate, the insights are most appreciated. Thanks very much. :)
Any other people with experience with XMPP deployments and can talk
about it without breaking an NDA? :D

Ouch. You serious, man?

Identity is the word you want. Bayanihan is more than just a logo --
it's an effort for a Philippine-based distro, hopefully contextualized
for the needs of the Filipino community.

Uhm, LSB[0]? The Tango Desktop Project[1]? Both worthwhile
undertakings, all in the spirit of open source.

You don't have to do this in Debian's and Ubuntu's `apache2', since
they have this enabled by default (as well as tons of other options,
see the source's `debian/rules' file.)
Also worth noting is Danga Interactive's memcached system[0] that was
used by LiveJournal; Sean Chittenden's libmemcache[1] provides a C API
lib of it (which I maintain in Debian ;)
