XFree86 is DEAD fish in the water. That's expected for their license change...
Debian stable is still using the last free XFree86 version before the license
change. That shouldn't be the case when Etch comes out this December.
Most of the improvements in X are done in X.org. Feature-wise, XFree86 pales
in comparison, moreso in code organization ( X.org 7 has started to go
modular).
