why not instead of making a new distro devote all our time making a good front end for linux.
It is no small joke to whip up a distro (or two, for that matter.)
optimize load speed of the graphical interface. i notice windows loads first the GUI before loading all the other drivers. it makes an impression that is faster loading compared to all other linux distro.
Some distros are already doing this; in Ubuntu Breezy X (via GDM) already loads earlier than some of the other core services (printing, et al.), and you can expect that Dapper will do so too (if not faster than what Breezy currently does.)
making a distro out of another distro could be a good exercise but what's the point. why not build it from scratch? if it will eliminate my habit of downloading a src then that would be better.
It won't. Even if you can afford skimping on downloading sources, would other users of the new distro follow suit? Or would they rather prefer not updating and just going on with the old version? How then do you intend to support them? Furthermore, what if your distro needs to support different versions of the same library? I suppose you can answer that you'll just _intend_ to support and use one library version, but in reality, that just won't make the cut. Furthermore, what happens if you intend to support upgrades to newer versions of software? Especially in the library example above, you will need to consider SONAME bumps, ABI/API changes, et. al, and quite possibly the need to rebuild and even port old versions of software that use the old libs to the new versions. And on top of that, you will also need to consider the growing needs of your new distro: autobuilders, support, community. And that's just the beginning (of your distro-whipping concerns, that is.) As I wrote earlier, whipping up a new distro or two is no small joke. It takes time and a LOT of effort, from a LOT of people to even get a working base system, assuming you get all of it in one shot. Love is not all you need; you also need a pipeline or two. To close, this is not an attempt to go against anyone making a new distro or two (or supporting home-grown distros for that matter;) all I am saying is that if you _do_ intend to introduce a new technology, please be sure that it does something better, and not just a Xerox or somesuch. If you care to reinvent the wheel, please make it better. Cheers, Zakame -- Zak B.
