if you need sound and com port redirection, you can try some live CDs. PXEs is one.

i used it to connect to a windows server running win2k, IIS (for intranet), and thin server. happy ang mga users ko because even though their workstations bootup with linux, they are a few clicks away to getting their favorite desktop, especially the more senior employees.

i didnt have much success though with the serial port redirection. and didnt bother much with the sounds, because all they needed was to run a desktop UI, connect to a file server and connect to a database, that runs MYSQL anyways.
