but if people telnet to port 80 (the web port) to get your PHP files...they will not get the actual PHP source code but the parsed output rendered by the PHP interpreter.

Uhm, it *is* closed, but "telnet <server> 80" still works, and it should, of course.

Or make the document root accessible to the web server only.
