i have already done that and also tried the rw option. i guess the default is 0 
since i think one of the two numbers at the end of the mtab entry is the umask.

i am currently looking at a parallel way of doing the backup, does anybody know 
of a live-cd that carries mondorescue? their livecd is currently unavailable 
due to bandwidth issues. thanks.
