Just to add to the discussion....there are 2 kinds of standards -- the de
facto and de joure standards. Microsoft Office .doc has become the
de facto due to prevalent use. De joure standards are developed by
committees/organizations (like OSI, IEEE, etc..) agreeing to comply to
a standard.
Problem with de joure standards is that vendors sort of add a few of
their own proprietary features and claiming support for the standard,
but actually messing up portability once the features are used on their
system...
thats true.... one good example from de facto standard became a de joure
standard due to market superiority is javascript... standardized by
ECMAscript... while netscape's javascript and microsoft's jscript aim to be
compatible with ECMAscript... they provide additional features not described
in ECMA specification... therefore... you have to use technologies within
its specification to ensure compatibility and portability with other
platforms...
fooler.
