Do you enjoy UNIX systems programming? Are you proud to be a geek?

My name is Carlo Sogono and I used to be a member of PLUG many years ago. I have since moved to Sydney, Australia and started working for a software company in the telecommunications industry. My boss and I will be visiting the Philippines either in the last quarter of this year or during the first half of next year to look at the possibility of opening an R&D branch in Manila. This has not yet been finalised as he is deciding between the Philippines and China, but I think Manila will be the likely winner simply because Filipinos communicate better than the Chinese. We would like to start with a team of 5, 1 of which will be a senior software engineer with 1-4 years experience in software development. This is not an immediate job opening and may take a while to open up but we need to shortlist possible candidates before we fly to Manila. If this something that might interest you then read on.

First a bit of what we do and what you will be doing. Our company, Protocom (www.protocomtech.com.au), is a software vendor for telco carriers. We specialise in messaging technologies and our flagship product, IMS, is an SMS/MMS gateway used by Australia's largest telco, Telstra (www.telstra.com). Telstra is the largest fixed line and mobile phone provider in Australia and you could say that it's PLDT and Globe combined. We were also EasyCall's messaging software provider (in Malaysia and the Philippines) back during those beeper years. Our software engineers are mostly HP-UX and Linux (RHEL) systems programmers in C and C++. As a senior software engineer in our overseas R&D office you will be responsible for managing our local developers and liaising with the Sydney office. You need to be able to read technical design specifications and coordinate software testing.

We wish to employ someone with only 1-4 years experience but with a genuine interest in UNIX software development. A certified UNIX geek. Salary package will be above the industry average for someone with equivalent years experience.

Minimum requirements:
* Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field (IT, CE, EE, ECE, etc.)
* 1-4 years work experience as a software developer in C/C++
* Experience in UNIX software development (FOSS projects may be considered) in C/C++
* Familiarity with the software development lifecycle
* Can program in Java but does not need to be proficient
* Minimum UNIX skills include multithreading, socket programming, debugging with GDB
* Genuine interest in computer science, UNIX, algorithms and problem solving
* Good communication skills

Optional but advantageous:
* Completed or currently pursuing a related graduate degree
* Experience in the telecommunications industry
* Experience with the SMPP protocol
* Experience in protocol design
* Experience with HP-UX and/or Linux administration

If this sounds like you, send your CV and cover letter to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You may add any additional documents supporting your claims, even a short essay-like document mentioning your personal interests in computing or otherwise. The more we know about you, the better. We will be contacting you when we have finalised our travel plans.
