if happened to me too, sometime when i try to delete DVD ISOs it
takes a few seconds before the free space gets reflected on df, but
when im impatient i issue sync right away.
the default is 30 seconds (3000 jiffies (100 jiffies per second)... see
/proc/sys/vm/bdflush 6th parameter) that the kernel will flush the dirty
buffers to disk.... when you delete, write, etc related to disk writes...
the kernel will delay writes to disk to improve disk i/o...
fooler.
