  I don't recall if he ever was paid for founding and working on the
  Debian project.  He does earn a living though by providing commercial
  support for Debian and its componentized counterpart on Progeny...

  FWIW I think the source article the OP linked to missed the point.
  While Ian did talk about Debian, his presence there was hardly only
  for Debian; he is, after all the current CTO of the newly-formed Linux
  Foundation, and that I think is where the ballpark is.

  Debian currently operates without too much input from Ian, or from any
  one single developer.  20,000+ packages is quite a feat for even a
  thousand developers to work on.
