Needs planning to do that: multiple data centers, mirroring and
syncing across DCs/DR sites, the whole business-continuity
thingamajig. Read up on ITIL guides as well. Fun read, those.

that's what i have in mind, redundancy, but it seems like my boss' what to
happen is some sort of magic wherein you can recover in a snap. sigh....
